Devlog #1: Habemus Papam
Okay!
So in keeping with Continue Your Game: The Jam, I'm writing to "keep a series of regular devlog posts on it about [my] progress." I started working on this game for Côme Martin's Pope game jam a few months ago, and just couldn't work out the mechanics I wanted in time. I knew I wanted players to roll for the kind of prayer sent up and then roll again for the kind of "miracle" the petitioner received, and I knew I wanted to work out a way where all the players were trying to convince another player, either by collaborating or working individually, but that last part is sort of eluding me.
I think I may crib from my game Amontillado, and have the players' dice against the Old Pope rolling two, since the story of a miracle strains credibility by its very nature, so it's more likely that the Old Pope (the GM) would win and not believe ... but that feels like only a part of it.
Anyway, I'm still noodling away on this! What are your favorite storytelling games? Where have you seen mechanics like this work at all?
Mysterious Ways
The New Pope needs miracles to make the Old Pope a saint. It's your job to convince him.
